[edit]Etymology
[edit]From the Germanic base *kagô (“bush, branch, stalk, stump”), also found in dialectal German Kag (“cabbage stalk, stump”), Swedish kage (“treestump”) + -gi (diminutive suffix).[1] Compare Old English ċeacga (“broom, furze, gorse”), whence English chag (“branch”). The ultimate origin could be related to English cog,[2] or Old English cæg.[3]
