Inherited from Malay kagum, from Javanese ꦏꦒꦸꦩ꧀ (kagum, astonished),[1] from Old Javanese kagöm (taken by sudden fright or astonishment), from ka- + göm, the latter perhaps ultimately derived from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *gem (to hold in the fist) or from a post-Proto-Malayo-Polynesian innovation; cf. Sundanese geueuman (frightening, haunted).[2]
