From Middle High German karc, from Old High German karag, charag, from Proto-Germanic *karagaz. Cognate with Dutch karig, Old English cariġ, ċeariġ (“careful, sorrowful, pensive, wary, chary, anxious, grievous, dire”). More at chary.
