From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle High German kestigen, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old High German kestigōn, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin castīgāre. The modern form is of Central and Low German origin; compare (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Low German kastīen. It was spread by Luther. Compare also Dutch kastijden.
