From Middle English kemben, from Old English cemban, from Proto-West Germanic *kambijan, from Proto-Germanic *kambijaną (to comb). Cognate with Dutch kemmen (to comb), German kämmen (to comb), Icelandic kemba (to comb; card; debug).
