Etymology[edit]

Most likely a pseudo-Hispanism, derived from English competition, and influenced by Spanish competición. A direct borrowing from Spanish competición is unlikely because the earliest attested quote is from 1971, the word does not appear in dictionaries prior to that, and the word for "competition" in Spanish before World War II is competencia (see Tagalog kompetensiya), while Spanish competición was a rarer word.
