From Middle Dutch corde, coorde, from Old French corde, from Latin chorda, from Ancient Greek (Doric) χορδά (khordá), Ionic χορδή (khordḗ, string of gut, the string of a lyre). Doublette with koorde (straight line connecting two dots of a curve).
