[edit]Related to Latvian sakrecêt (“to curdle”),[1] and possibly akin to archaic Lithuanian krẽklas (“breast”).[2] Further origin unclear:
- According to Machek, from krèšti (“to clot, coagulate”) with progressive assimilation.[3]
- Fraenkel suggests kinship with kurkulaĩ (“frogspawn”) and Proto-Slavic *krękъ (“spawn”).[3]
- Cabej connects Albanian qurra (“snot”).[4][5]
