Serbo-Croatian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Ultimately from Latin crux.

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

krȋž m (Cyrillic spelling кри̑ж)

  1. (Croatia, Bosnia) cross, crucifix (also figuratively)
    Synonym: kȑst

Usage notes[edit]

This word, in a religious context, is used mainly by Catholic Christians, and consequently generally more common among Croats than Serbs. Orthodox Christians (and Serbs generally) tend to prefer the term kȑst.
