Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Ottoman Turkish قرائتخانه (ḳırāʾatḫāne, “a public reading room, a coffee house where newspapers are kept”),[1][2] from Arabic قِرَاءَة (qirāʔa, “reading”) + Persian خانه (xâne, “house”), verbal noun of قَرَأَ (qaraʔa, “to read, to recite”),[3] equivalent to compound of kıraat + hane.
