Estonian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Possibly a derivation from the same root as lebama ‎(to lay down). Possibly a seperate loan; from Proto-Germanic *slēpa-z, for which a cognate would be Old Saxon slāp ‎(sleep), or from Proto-Germanic *χlewa-, for which a cognate would be Old Icelandic hlé ‎(defence, shade, defensive place).
