Possibly from lebama +‎ -u. Compare Finnish lepo. Possibly a separate loan; from Proto-Germanic *slēpaz, compare Old Saxon slāp (sleep), or from Proto-Germanic *hlewą, compare Old Norse hlé (defence, shade, defensive place).
