Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *lewbʰ- (to peel, break off). Compare Dutch loof, German Laub, Irish luibh (herb), Latin liber (bast; book), Lithuanian lúoba (bark). Probably a variant of lapë with voiced labial.
