Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *leup- 'to peel, break off'. Compare Dutch loof, German Laub, Irish luibh 'herb', Latin liber 'bast; book', Lithuanian lúoba 'bark'. Probably a variant of lapë with voiced labial.
