Alteration of lakthi (Arbanasi), collective of lakth (“loop, mesh”) + -i (collective suffix), because of the tree's flexible branches,[1][2] compare Latvian lazda (“hazel”), lagzda (“hazel”), Lithuanian lazdà (“stick, staff”), Old Prussian laxde (“hazel”).
