From Old English lendenu pl (loins) (in compound lenden-, lende-), from Proto-Germanic *landį̄, *landijō (loin), from Proto-Indo-European *lendʰ- (kidney, waist, loin). Cognate with Dutch lendenen pl (loins), German Lende (haunch, loin), Swedish länd (haunch, loin), Icelandic lend (loin). More at loin.
