From Proto-Germanic *leuganą, from Proto-Indo-European *lewgʰ-. Cognate with Old Frisian liāga, Old Saxon liogan, Old Dutch liegan, Old High German liogan, Old Norse ljúga, Gothic 𐌻𐌹𐌿𐌲𐌰𐌽 (liugan).
