Etymology[edit]

Probably from the verb llampegar, itself from llamp (see also llampar), or, through Old Occitan, possibly from a Vulgar Latin *lampicāre, from Latin lampas or Late Latin lampō, lampāre[1]. Compare Occitan lampec, lampig; see also Spanish relámpago, Portuguese relâmpago.
