Obscure,[1] perhaps a crossing of a descendant of Proto-Indo-European *lówh₃trom (that which is used for washing), and of Latin lūridus (pale) which originated Italian lordo (filthy). Compare also lorda.

In any case, cognate of Portuguese ludro.
