Vietnamese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

See miếng. Compare cảnh vs. kiểng.

This form is from the undiphthongized variant of root: *-mɛːŋʔ > *mɛːɲᴮ¹ (*-ŋ palatalized after monophthongal front vowels) > mánh, while miếng derived from the diphthongization of *ɛː: *-mɛːŋʔ > miəŋᴮ¹. Compare also Sino-Vietnamese morpheme danh, from *mjɛːŋᴬ > *jɛːŋᴬ¹ > jɛːɲᴬ¹.

Pronunciation[edit]
