[edit]From an archaic spelling malestrøm,[1] from male (“to grind”) + strøm (“current, stream”), probably from earlier Dutch maelstrom (modern Dutch maalstroom).[2] Compare English maelstrom, German Mahlstrom and Swedish malström.
