Etymology

From *mararja, from Byzantine Greek *μαράθριον (*maráthrion), diminutive of Ancient Greek μάραθρον (márathron), μάραθον (márathon). Alternatively, from a Vulgar Latin derivative of the same Ancient Greek word: compare Latin marathrum. Related to Romanian mărar and perhaps to Old Church Slavonic молотрь (molotrĭ, fennel).
