[edit]Inherited from Late Latin māchināre (“mill, grind”), a verb based on Latin māchina (“device, mill”), an early borrowing from Ancient Greek. Compare Venetan masnar~maxenar, Dalmatian macnur, Italian macinare. Morphological doublet of machinâ, a borrowing from Latin.
