Etymology
Possibly a compound formation from mbi + thej (“to turn, twist”), a variant of thyej . Alternatively from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *mer (“to plait, bind; rope”). Compare Old High German bardi (“shield”), Italian barda (“horse harness”), Greek βροχός (vrochós, “cord”).
