From Proto-Indo-European *h₃miǵʰyeh₂-, a derivative of *meyǵʰ-, *h₃meyǵʰ-. Compare Old Armenian մէզ (mēz), Latin meiō, Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬉𐬯𐬀𐬙𐬌 (maēsati), Sanskrit मेहति (mehati), Lithuanian myžti, Ancient Greek ὀμείχω (omeíkhō).
