Azerbaijani

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Calque of Turkish milletvekili. By surface analysis, millət +‎ vəkil.

Noun

[edit]

millət vəkili (definite accusative millət vəkilini, plural millət vəkililər)

  1. (neologism) deputy, Member of Parliament
    Synonym: deputat

Note

[edit]
  • Although "deputat", derived from the Russian депутат, remains the official title of MPs in Azerbaijan, referring to them as "millət vəkili" is more common in everyday contexts and in the media.[1] This is unlike other calqued renderings of Turkish government terms (such as cümhurbaşqanı and başbaxan), that are chiefly used for Turkish government organs only.
