From Proto-Slavic *melti, from Proto-Indo-European *melh₂- (to crush, grind); cognate with Upper Sorbian mlěć, Polish mleć, Czech mlít, Russian моло́ть (molótʹ), Old Church Slavonic млѣти (mlěti).
