From a Late Latin, Vulgar Latin *mustaceus, from Byzantine Greek μουστάκιον ‎(moustákion), diminutive of (Doric) Ancient Greek μύσταξ ‎(mústax, upper lip), from Proto-Indo-European *mendʰ- ‎(to chew). Related to French moustache, Sicilian mustazzu, Romanian mustață, Spanish mostacho.
