mutton bird (plural mutton birds)

  1. (chiefly Australia, New Zealand) Any of various seabirds whose flesh is said to taste like mutton when cooked, especially Puffinus griseus, Puffinus tenuirostris, or a petrel of the genus Pterodroma.
