Etymology[edit]
Probably borrowed through Vulgar Latin from Latin mania (compare Romanian mânie). Alternatively from Greek μανία (manía, “madness”) given the corresponding stress.[1] Note Proto-Indo-European *mey- (“to change, exchange”). Compare Sanskrit मेनि (mení, “revenge, vengeance”), Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬉𐬥𐬌 (maēni, “punishment”), Old High German mein (“incorrect, deceitful”), Old Norse meinn (“harmful”), mein (“damage, pity, misfortune”).
