[edit]Etymology
[edit]Unknown; often considered to be from a Vulgar Latin *marracīna, *marrūcīna, derived from Latin marra (“thorn”), but possibly also from an alteration of Latin malitia, with the influence of the Romanian suffix -ciune. Compare Spanish maleza. Compare also the related Albanian mërqinje, with the same meaning as the Romanian word. Cognate with Aromanian mãrãtsini.
