Central Franconian

Alternative forms

  • neist (Moselle Franconian)
  • nix (from colloquial German; now widespread, even exclusive in Kölsch)

Etymology

The forms Ripuarian nüüs, Moselle Franconian neist (also Luxembourgish näischt) can be traced back to older *niust of somewhat obscure origin, but eventually probably from Old High German niowiht, whence also net (not) and German nicht, nichts.

Pronunciation

Pronoun

nüüs (indefinite)

  1. (Ripuarian, dated in some dialects) nothing
Wat nüüs koss, dat es och nüüs.
What costs nothing is worth nothing.
