name after (third-person singular simple present names after, present participle naming after, simple past and past participle named after)

  1. To intentionally give someone or something the same name or a derivation of the same name as another person, place, or thing.

Usage notes[edit]

The object of the sentence may be inserted between the inflection of name and the word after; e.g.: the scientist names the germs he discovers after famous pop artists; or the scientist discovers germs, which he names after famous pop artists.
