Etymology[edit]

The normal way of expressing this would be namo (homage) buddhassa (to the Buddha) siddham (success). However, instead of the normal dative of buddha, the form for the dative of purpose is used. It is entirely possible that the Sanskrit बुद्धाय (buddhāya) has been used instead; the initial part of the phrase is attested in Sanskrit with the cognate construction, in the form नमो (namo) बुद्धाय (buddhāya).
