Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Finnic *neljä toicta kümmentä. Equivalent of neli(four) +‎ teist(of second). Shortened from neliteistkümmend ("four of the second ten"), which is still evident in declension. Cognate with Finnish neljätoista.
