Since the 1870s; after Ancient Greek νεωτερίζω (neōterízō, to (forcibly) innovate; to revolutionize) (an -ίζειν (-ízein) derivation of νεώτερος (neṓteros), the comparative of νέος (néos, new))); neoteric +‎ -ize.
