Czech

Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *netopyřь, which is a compounded term, with the first element *neto- possibly reflecting (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *nekʷto-, oblique e-grade of *nókʷts (night). The second element is usually taken to be *pyřь (flier) (compare pero (feather)).[1] Another theory states it is the result of folk etymology or taboo deformation, based on *lepetyrь from *lepetati (to fly irregularly).[2]
