Etymology

Compound of neu (new) +‎ gierig (greedy), but originally neusgierig with an adverbial genitive. A Middle Low German formation that replaced older Middle High German niugerne. Compare Dutch nieuwsgierig and Norwegian Bokmål nysgjerrig.
