Latin

Participle

(deprecated template usage) nīsam

  1. accusative feminine singular of nīsus

Serbo-Croatian

Alternative forms

  • (historical, regional, Standard Montenegrin) nijésam
  • (regional, chiefly Serbia) nésam

Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Slavic *ne + *esmь, first-person singular present tense form of *byti. This formation later created *ne jesьmь in the South Slavic vernaculars, which merged to become něsьmь (attested in 1406). The term něsьmь eventually formed něsamь. Because of the yat reflex, něsamь became rendered as nisam in Ikavian speeches.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /nǐːsam/
  • Hyphenation: ni‧sam

Verb

nísam

  1. (Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia) negative first-person singular present of biti
