Etymology[edit]

Formed from the root si (to lean on) (as in Sanskrit श्रयते (śrayate)) by adding the prefix ni-. Formally corresponds to post-Vedic Sanskrit निश्रयते (niśrayate), but this appears to be a parallel development.[1]
