Etymology

From South Slavic; cf. Serbo-Croatian њу̏шка / njȕška (“snout, muzzle, neb”), Bulgarian нюшка (njuška). Alternatively from Albanian noçë, of unclear origin. Possibly from an older *noshë, continuing Proto-Indo-European *néh₂s, *nh₂es (“nose, nostrils”), with the affricatization of the original final fricative (cf. çaj ~ shaj etc.).
