Etymology

Late 18th century: from New Latin noctula, from noctua (small owl, from nox, noctis, “night”, and whence also Italian nottua) +‎ -ula (diminutive suffix), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *nókʷts (night). Cognate to English noctule and Venetian nòtoła.
