[edit]From Middle High German niht (“not”), from Old High German niwiht, from nio (“never”) + wiht (“being, creature”), the last from Proto-Germanic *wihtą.
Cognate with German nicht (dialectal net), English not. Doublet of nèt...nèt (“neither...nor”).
