From Old Church Slavonic *освѣнѥ (*osvěnje), from *ob (around, about) +‎ *svěně (except, without). First attested in the 18th century. The form osven is first attested in the 16th century, whereas the even older form osvin is attested in the 14th century, in the Dušan Code.[1]
