Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Slavic *pěkrъ (cognate with Latin pulcher (beautiful);[1] compare also Old Church Slavonic пѣгъ (pěgŭ)). Or cognate with Old High German fēh, Ancient Greek ποικίλος (poikílos, multicoloured) from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *peyḱ-.[2]
