Uncertain, with possibly multiple distinct roots conflated, such as Slavic (Russian полоса (polosa), Russian пласт (plast)) and Germanic (Swedish spalt); the most likely direct Slavic cognate is dialectal Russian полсть (polstʹ). Related to Ingrian palsta, Karelian palsta and Votic palsta.
