English

Etymology

parchment +‎ -ize

Verb

parchmentize (third-person singular simple present parchmentiz, present participle es, simple past and past participle parchmentized)

  1. (transitive) To convert to a parchment-like substance, especially by sulfuric acid.
    • 1885, Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers:
I have often wondered whether Mr. Edison has ever tried to parchmentize the bamboo filament. It is already denser than cotton thread, as well as stronger, and yet nearly as flexible. There seems no reason why it cannot be thus changed in its physical nature by means of strong sulphuric acid.
