Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *peth₂- (to spread out). Cognate with Old Prussian pette (shoulder), pettis (shoulder blade); outside of Baltic, compare Latin pateō (to be open; to increase, extend), Ancient Greek πετάννῡμι (petánnūmi, to spread out, open).[1][2]
