Latin[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From pīla (pillar) +‎ -astrum (quality-reducing suffix), thus meaning roughly "incomplete pillar", as pilasters lack the full volume of the element they represent. Compare palliastrum, referring to a poor pallium.

Pronunciation[edit]
