From Vulgar Latin *pisellum, diminutive of (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin pisum, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ancient Greek πίσον (píson).
- Note: Modern (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Greek has "reborrowed" the Italian plural piselli for its common word for pea (singular): μπιζέλι (bizéli).
