Inherited from Middle French pluye, from Old French pluie, from a Vulgar Latin *ploia < *plovia, from Latin pluvia (with influence from the verb *plovere). Compare Occitan pluèja, Catalan pluja, Italian pioggia, Romanian ploaie, also Portuguese chuva, Spanish lluvia.
