Etymology[edit]
From Old French poinçon, ponson, ponchon, probably a derivation from a Vulgar Latin verb *punctiāre from punctus or from Latin punctiōnem, accusative singular of punctiō. Compare Italian punzone, Spanish punzón. Doublet of ponction.
